Do Something Amazing

For Rentokil-Initial's 2013 rebranding launch, they wanted to have a heartfelt piece to band the staff from their three separate brands together. While Rentokil supplied the 'Do something amazing' line and the kid stills, I took it into the 'photo of a photo' territory, then expanded it to show the movement in the photos in apparent three dimensions. It was a great excuse to get hands on with some old school techniques - I printed out the stock shots, and took photos of them all around the studio (my back table, front porch, plants, even one of my sons old schoolbooks!). The nice thing about this piece is that it won't get old. It's a nice 'archival slide night' look.
Bupa 2013 Vic/Tas sales internal launch

This is one of a series of 5 videos I recently shot and produced for Bupa's sales department in Australia. For internal use only (there's no reason internal videos can't look great!) it shows staff from all over the country all 'on song' for their 2013 campaign launch. Notice how comfortable many of these 'non-actors' look while staring directly at the camera? It's all done with mirrors… they're actually staring at ME!

Here's one of 14 interviews I shot for an IT company's website. The purpose was to put these videos up on the site, and have potential employees think 'hey, there's someone I would want to work with'. As I prefer to work unscripted when shooting 'real people', I had the talent talk to me via my mirror box, giving the impression (to the viewer) that they're talking to you directly, rather than emoting to a camera - which is hard when you're not an actor ;)

The Inca Curse-Book Trailer

Imagine this… A client rings you, asks you for a movie trailer… for a book! Problems to solve: How do we fill 3 minutes with no footage to start with? What do the characters look like? Are they doing things we can replicate in the real world? It's a fantasy/Fiction - will our representation on screen match what the author had in mind? Whats the story we're conveying - I haven't read the (unreleased) book, yet need to show what the book is like! This was a great fun job to solve - I decided to do it with sillouhettes, allowing the viewer to 'fill the blanks'. With the hand of Rob MacDermid on animation, this piece really came out well, with Random House (the publisher) saying it was the best book trailer they've ever had. Crime Stoppers - myPD (TVC)

One of four TVCs I recently shot in one day: with a crew of only three! As I knew I wouldn't have time for primes, I shot this on my PMW-EX1 because it has a zoom lens. I figured I'd get away with the grain (as it's a slow lens) for the benefit of having lots of shots (shooting Robert Rodriguez style. Punch in, punch out, reframe, all in one take.) With a 10 bit AJA recorder on the rig, it gave me enough data in the dark bits to recover from the grain. Director, DoP : Kearon de Clouet

Z-Day - PMW-F3 S-Log Camera test day1

Today I shot some setups for a Zombie movie I'm DP'ing. Kieren Wuest (Director) has graciously allowed time on set for initial setups and tests… it's a real luxury to have testing time! What I learned from todays shoot: - I need a Lamparte Follow focus with hard stops (I shot today without a FF… I have an old Red Rock) - We'll have to rethink the framing/staging on the 'zombie kids' shot. I'm shooting this with my S-Log enabled Sony PMW-F3, with the sony T2 cinema primes and a hired Zeiss 18mm prime. I'll have the camera mounted on a dolly and Jib, giving me a lot of movement, but more importantly, reducing reset times (this is a 10 minute film, to be shot in only two days). I've gone into this project with a few distinct ideas of what I wanted to achieve as a DP, one of which being I wanted to shot a more 'European' looking film than a 'Hollywood' film, but still making it watchable to a 'popcorn and coke' audience. I also want to 'light it dark'. We found a lot of the windows were blacked out, giving us a little more control… this was all shot with available light. I think all we'll do is have some lights on standby to create some edges when we need them. Shooting S-log onto a Ki Mini (in Prores HQ) will give us the options to really have some control in post to darken it up, and to put power windows on faces (if we need them). Salty Rooster - Franchise Launch Video

A Sydney-based chicken burger business needed a 'franchisee hype video' to give an impression at the launch of their brand into the world of businesses available to franchise. Giving the viewer an 'emotional connection' with the founders' vision, as well as the community spirit embodied by Salty Rooster was the driving brief behind the style of the show (the more in-depth technical data is a pdf attachment with the kit). Interviews shot by me, as well as the offline edit and sound mix. Online edit By Craig @ Images Post. Shot on Sony PMW-EX1. No filters (no time!), and two small lite panel LED key lights. This was a 6 location single day shoot - about 2 hrs of driving. One of those jobs where you turn up on location, and need to actually find someone to interview... very busy day! With that sort of schedule, I could really only have two small key lights on hand - very much a run-and-gun. Big thanks to my cam assistant Mic Simpson for being so solid, too.

Kearon de Clouet is a Director of Photography, Talent Director and Producer based in Sydney, Australia.

While his 'A' Camera is Sony's CineAlta PMW-F3 (s-log upgraded) onto a Blackmagic 422 10 bit recorder, he owns a number of cameras, and chooses the right tool for the job.

He has credits in TV, Film and Radio - in Drama and Advertising.... he's been around for a while, and still considers himself lucky to make a living out of something millions of people would gladly do for free!

As owner and creative director of Makinnoize Media, he's backed by a team of talented editors, animators and writers ready to work with you on your project.
