Run and Gun shooting on a DSLR? My thoughts after saturdays shoot.
At the tail end of what has been one of the busiest periods of my DP/Director/Producer year (..and we've only just started!), I finally did a shoot on my GH2 for a very picky client - my kid!
See, I shoot with 'real' cameras... but am into the idea of DSLRs enough to actually buy one. I went with the Lumix GH2, as it's sensor and pic quailty are superior to the well-known Canon 5D Mk2 (in my opinion).
Thoughts:
Not monitoring audio - VERY sucky. Had a radio reciever on the hotshoe, but hadn't noticed the mic connection on the transmitter was dud on some takes till edit time.
Focussing with no 'peaking' focus assist - ridiculous. How the heck can ANYONE make a 'video' camera without this feature??
Handing (motion), better than expected.
Shot a 50fps (coz I got the settings wrong) at 720p, 88mbps. GREAT quality picture, no tearing on compression in pans and action… held up OK on a class 10 SD card (as I use in my EX1)
Will have to use the on camera 7"monitor, but I enjoyed shooting with a less bulky rig (than my loaded up EX1).
BTW: I got Duncan (my 10 year old) to do the compile edit in FCPX, then I got dragged into finally trying it. VERY quick, but there are things I need to do that I can't figure out… - I might have to read a book.
Loved how FCPX easily read the SD cards, no double handling (as in FCP7 workflow). Niiiiice.
Enjoy seeing what I had to clean up yesterday:
